User story map templates

Jeff Patton style user story maps: the activity backbone across the top, user tasks beneath it, and stories sliced into horizontal releases. Estimates roll up per release and per column, so the walking skeleton is visibly the smallest slice that spans the backbone rather than an assertion in a caption. The planning artefact a flat backlog throws away.

  • Story Map — Peer-to-Peer Marketplace MVP

Twenty cards and 146 points across four activities and four bands, where the first release covers discovery, listing and payment but leaves disputes entirely to release two — a 3-of-4 backbone span the map flags as a walking-skeleton gap.

  • Story Map — Mobile Banking First Release

A genuine walking skeleton: eight cards and 54 points that touch all four activities, so the first release can be used end to end — get in, see the money, move it and freeze a lost card — before any of the everyday-banking depth arrives.

  • Story Map — Outpatient Clinic Scheduling

Replacing three paper diaries with one booking screen, sliced into three waves; wave one books, moves and cancels but never runs a clinic, so the map flags the whole running-the-clinic activity as missing from the first band.

  • Story Map — Adaptive Learning Platform

A first-year plan for an adaptive study platform using ordinal band tokens, where the mastery model and retrieval-grounded tutor land only in band three and the pilot cohort ships with no way to ask for help at all.

  • Story Map — Food Delivery Evening

The backbone is the customer's evening rather than the org chart: decide, order, wait, deliver, put it right. Written with bullet-led cards, it ships one restaurant in one city first and leaves every complaint path to band two.

  • Story Map — CRM Migration Cutover

Three cutovers moving accounts, pipeline and forecasting onto a new CRM without losing a selling day; the read-only shadow cutover carries no forecasting at all, which the map names as the gap sales leadership will feel first.

    Business & Strategy
  • Story Map — Internal Developer Portal

Platform-team milestones along the service lifecycle — scaffold, ship, operate, comply — with bracketed estimates; the golden path gets an engineer to production before lunch but leaves every compliance control to the last milestone.

  • Story Map — Event Ticketing On-Sale

Ninety seconds of on-sale pressure mapped across queueing, seat selection and payment with point-suffixed estimates; the first on-sale survives the rush end to end and pushes the entire resale and refund activity into a backlog band.

  • Story Map — Telehealth Urgent Care Triage

Remote-first urgent care where the first band is clinician-led and complete across all four activities — a real walking skeleton — while model-suggested triage, red-flag escalation and connected devices arrive later, two of them still unestimated.

  • Story Map — Warehouse Picking App

Replacing the paper pick list for a picker walking twelve kilometres a shift, written with epic and step aliases; go-live covers a single aisle end to end but leaves damaged stock and supervisor calls to the warehouse-wide rollout.
